Evaluate the Metro Orange Line Busway pavement to determine the cause of extensive rutting and design a pavement to alleviate the problem.

Early pavement failures were experienced in the Metro Orange Line Busway primarily in the form of extensive rutting. QES was contracted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to analyze the busway pavement. QES' responsibilities for this project were to perform an analysis of the existing conditions, make a determination of the cause of early failures, and develop rehabilitation strategies. Also, QES was to develop construction documents, review mixture designs, and oversee the construction quality assurance process. QES completed a review of all historical information; performed field reviews; coordinated and supervised additional field sampling and laboratory testing; and completed pavement rehabilitation recommendations.

QES utilized the results of the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) and Repeated Shear Constant Height testing to determine the rate of rutting and the likelihood that rutting would increase. Using this information, pavement restoration recommendations were made, using a high quality Superpave designed asphalt pavement. QES was also involved in the rehabilitation construction, including test strip acceptance and construction quality assurance testing.
